Hi! I want to share some non-skincare based tips that have helped my skin a lot. These things are underrated but they are SO important. Do not neglect these things. If you do, you may blame your skincare routine for your skin not improving. Instill these good habits, get rid of bad ones, and I promise you, your skin will glow soon enough.
1. Drink a ton of water
Your skin needs to be hydrated! That’s why moisturizer is a thing. Now, I love moisturizer and everything but the best way for your skin to be hydrated is the natural way. Give your body water and it will reward you in so many more ways than just your skin. You will be healthier in general, along with flawless skin of course.
Hydrated skin will help your skin seem more smooth by helping the elasticity of the skin. The appearance of wrinkles and fine lines will lessen and your skin will seem firmer. When I started drinking 2+ liters of water a day consistently, my skin was glowing and got smoother without me changing anything about my skincare routine.
2. Eat healthy and don’t eat unhealthy
Your skin NEEDS nutrients to repair itself and get rid of bad toxins. Those nutrients have to come from clean, natural sources. If you eat a lot of junk food, it is only adding to the toxins making it harder for your body to remove them. Lots of people have beautiful skin without using any skincare. Some are blessed genetically but some are also just really healthy. They don’t poison their body.
I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I used to eat sweets everyday but then I stopped for health reasons (I was getting a little chubby). Then, my skin started clearing up out of nowhere pretty fast. Other than the sweets, I eat clean, healthy foods so that dietary change helped my skin a lot. Now, you don’t have to give up all your pleasures. Nowadays, I eat desert 2 days a week and on special occasions. Having beautiful skin is important to me but you also need to have some simple pleasures in your life.
3. Change your pillow case/sleep on your back
This simple thing can really help. When you sleep everyday on the same pillow case, bacteria and germs build up on that pillow case. Then every night, you just put it back onto your face and add to it. You have to change it frequently or else your skin will hate you for it. I change my pillow case and my bedsheet every week now.
You could also sleep on your back but that is not possible for everyone. For me, it was really uncomfortable at first but now it feels natural. Sometimes, I still sleep on my side/front when I am really tired.
You are sleeping for over 25% of the day (if you have a healthy sleep schedule). Make sure your bed/pillow is clean and it will help your skin.
4. Have a separate towel for your face
Do not use the same towel you use for your hands on your face. Your hand is touching things full of bacteria all day and when you dry them with your towel, some of the bacteria gets on it. Then, when you dry your face, the bacteria is transmitted to your face. Having separate towels for them will keep your face clean and healthy meaning your skin stays smooth.
I have 3 separate towels: 1 for my body, 1 for my hands, and 1 for my face. I wash them every week and replace them every 6 months. You don’t have to replace that often but I take comfort in knowing that I have a fresh new pair.
Also, try not to touch your face with your hands throughout the day. Same reasoning as before.
5. Get lots of sunlight
I know some people say the sun is bad for your skin but that’s only if you are in the torching heat with a glaring sun and you are not wearing any sunscreen. The sun is GOOD for you. It is natural, sunlight is the best source of vitamin D and humans evolved with lots of sunlight. It is essential for proper bodily function which includes clearing the skin of toxins.
Of course, wear sunscreen and reapply if you are out in the sun for too long. I like to take 1 hour walks everyday during the day to get sunlight in and to get some extra physical activity in. These walks have helped my body and my skin.
These simple things are overlooked but they are just as important as a good skincare routine, if not more important. They are also vital for being healthier in general which will lead to you being happier, sharper, and more focused. Do not forget, your skin is part of your body. If your body is not healthy, it will be hard for your skin to be healthy. I hope you enjoyed reading some of my thoughts on this matter and have a beautiful day or night, whenever you’re reading this <3.
